AN ABERYSTWYTH care home is set to close with the loss of 33 jobs, the Cambrian News can reveal.
Ceredigion council wants to sell off the Bodlondeb care home building after failing in its attempts to transfer it to a private operator or to enter into a partnership with Hywel Dda Health Board for a care facility at the site.
New admissions to the care home will cease with immediate effect, the council has said.
The future of the care home has been under threat since 2014, when consultations began into its future.
The council’s Cabinet resolved in July 2015 to transfer the home to a private provider or look to Hywel Dda to provide a “collaborative care model” at the loss-making facility.
Both of those avenues were explored, the council said in a report set to go before the Healthier Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Friday, but both have failed, leaving the future of the home in doubt.
The new report, was due to be discussed before the general election but postponed by council leadership in what one councillor labelled a “cynical ploy” It now recommends a consultation into the closure of the home adding that “admissions would now cease at Bodlondeb with immediate effect”.
A “full appraisal of the building and site will be commissioned to inform options for its disposal,” the recommendations add.
The council report says Bodlondeb, which employs 21 contracted staff and 12 relief staff, has “consistently been operating at half capacity”, seeing the home run up a “significant financial loss” of nearly £400,000 a year.
