CENTENARIAN Beryl Griffiths is looking forward to cosy and warm winter’s nights thanks to a £2.3m scheme to spruce up homes built for returning war heroes in Dwyfor and Meirionnydd.

The significant improvement work was carried out by Willmott Dixon, and included a major overhaul of the houses’ exteriors.

Under the two-year scheme, scores of houses were transformed in Garndolbenmaen, Llannor, Llanbedrog, Brithdir, Dyffryn Ardudwy, Harlech, Bala, Tywyn and Aberdyfi.

One benefactor of the new scheme is 101-year-old Beryl Griffiths.

“My home is wonderful, it’s nice and warm day and night. All my family and friends who come to visit tell me the house is like new. Cartrefi Cymunedol Gwynedd staff and Willmott Dixon workers have done a brilliant job and I can’t thank them enough,” she said.

Mrs Griffiths has been a CCG tenant for nearly 70 years.

She and her family are the only tenants to ever have lived at her refurbished house since 1948.

“My husband William Griffiths fought in the Second World War for six years, we were given the house when he returned,” Mrs Griffiths continued.

“We are the first, and only people to have lived in this house.

“Before the work was carried out, the house was cold and draughty. I would have to use a lot of blankets in the winter to keep myself warm, now I only need one.

“I’m content and happy here, and enjoy listening to the radio and watching the soaps in a warm and comfortable home.”
