DOZENS of homes in Machynlleth, including a care home, were left without power during sub-zero temperatures after a fire at the Lloyds Coaches depot.

While weather conditions including snow and high winds had caused havoc across Wales on Friday, the power cut which affected around 40 properties in Machynlleth was caused by a tyre fire at the depot shortly before 5pm, with some homes left without power during one of the coldest days of the year until 10pm.

One of the properties affected by the power cut was Cartref Dyfi, the town’s Bupa-run care home.

Firefighters from Machynlleth attended at the scene and spent around an hour battling the blaze.

A fire brigade spokesperson said: “On Friday at 4.47pm, crews from Machynlleth were called to a fire at a property in Heol y Doll.

“The fire involved tyres and was extinguished by firefighters using two main jets and small gear. The electricity board and police were also in attendance.

“The fire service left the incident at 5.50pm.”
