Madam,

I have been horrified to see on television the consequences of dog attacks on sheep. Last week on Aberdyfi golf course, I witnessed an incident when a border terrier which was not on a lead suddenly and without warning started to chase the sheep that have free range on the course. The owner was powerless to stop his pet dog and soon the sheep were terrified and galloping across the course. Fortunately the dog fell into a ditch and the chase was over. When challenged by myself, the owner was completely ignorant of the damage his dog could have caused by running the sheep to ground. I pointed out that sheep cannot run far when they are in lamb and could abort their lamb, and pointed out the damage his dog could have caused.

Please could we ask farmers and landowners to put signs up warning dog walkers that they must put their dogs on a lead when entering fields with sheep in them or the pets might be shot.

Farmers are busy people without having to police the public constantly. Thanks to our farmers we are all able to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Let us be responsible in helping and not hindering them.

Yours etc
