OVERTAKING lanes and increasing safety on the A44 and A487 in Ceredigion should be a “priority” following a new funding announcement, the county’s Assembly Member has said.
The Welsh Government recently announced a multi-million pound scheme to tackle ‘pinch points’ on trunk roads linking the north and south of the country, including the A487 between Cardigan and Dolgellau and the A44 between Newton and Aberystwyth.
The A44 between Aberystwyth and Llangurig has been rated for several years as the most dangerous stretch of road in Wales, while the A487 has been the scene of several major crashes in recent years.
The Welsh Government said it is identifying locations where they can “improve overtaking opportunities” to reduce “driver frustration, unsafe overtaking manoeuvres and journey times”.
Ceredigion AM Elin Jones welcomed the investment but told the Cambrian News that Ceredigion roads need to be “first in line” to benefit from the funding.
“As a long-time campaigner for increased safety on our roads, I have called many times for the government to look into safe overtaking spaces on our two main trunk roads in Ceredigion,” Ms Jones said.
“The A44 and A487 can be very dangerous, and so I’m glad that the government are investing time and money into seeing how it can provide safe overtaking points on both roads."
