A 20-year-old from Aberystwyth is making the most of the area’s mines by offering guided tours.
The metal mines near the seaside town have, apparently, never been open to the public before, but Ioan Lord is opening them up to all now.
Mining expert Ioan published his first book on the mid Wales’ mining industry, Rich Mountains of Lead: the Metal Mining Industry of Cwm Rheidol and Ystumtuen, in 2018.
He is a graduate of Bangor University in Welsh history with archaeology and, when not working as a guard and locomotive fireman on the Vale of Rheidol Railway, is an honorary curator at industrial museums at Corris and Llywernog Silver-lead Mine, near Ponterwyd.
He established Mid Wales Mine Adventures this year to increase local and national interest in the area’s mining heritage, and to promote this aspect of Welsh history through guided trips over the dramatic landscape and into the mine workings themselves.
“I have always been astonished at how little attention is given to mid Wales’ metal mining industry,” he said.
“The range of surface and underground tours are aimed at anyone who has an interest in history or underground exploration, or those looking for something different to do in the area.
“They will make this integral part of Welsh history and culture accessible, as well as providing a memorable experience for visitors and tourists to the area.”
