AN ABERYSTWYTH councillor has hit out at “irresponsible” cyclists who obstruct pedestrians by locking their bikes to lampposts on narrow pavements.
Cllr Martin Shewring, who represents Rheidol ward on Aberystwyth Town Council, claimed that the problem is particularly bad on South Road.
“This irresponsible action of leaving bikes chained up to posts on the streets of Aberystwyth is causing concern,” Cllr Shewring told the Cambrian News.
“They are an obstruction to pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled, and are an eyesore.”
Cllr Shewring has called on the county council to take action against those who block pavements by locking their bikes to posts on streets.
“This obstruction of the pavement needs to be addressed by the local authority,” he added.
“It seems to be happening about the town on a more regular basis and causes great concern.”
Ceredigion County Council told the Cambrian News that it was not aware of any complaints regarding “inconsiderate obstruction”, but called on cyclists and others to have “due regard” for people who use footpaths and pavements in the town.
