Madam,
I write in response to Iestyn Daniel’s letter about the lack of vigils for the deaths of the many people who are murdered for their religion.
The Orlando vigil was organised not by anyone in authority such as the county or town councils, but by one person in response to the deaths of a group of people they felt affinity to. They spread the message out via social media and it was I who invited the police officers pictured with the rainbow epilates, as I was aware that those officers were undergoing training around LGBT issues and felt they should be aware of such an event.
It did not need months of planning or the per-mission of any authority, it needed one person to see what was needed and to tell others. For the many victims of religious hatred anywhere in the world, it needs just one person to decide to do have a vigil to remember them, and then do it.
Yours etc
