THE organiser of a Machynlleth litter-pick is hoping the event will inspire people to ensure the town is “looking its best”.
Jacinta MacDermot, a former Machynlleth town councillor, is organising the litter-pick in the town on Saturday, 8 April, after saying she was getting increasingly disappointed by seeing the level of litter in and around the town.
She warned that with tourism being so important to Machynlleth it was important that residents in the town did their best to ensure the town looked clean and tidy.
Jacinta said: “I walk a lot and every time I go out I see pavements, ditches and kerb sides littered with rubbish, and it really upsets me. We live in such a beautiful area, but it’s spoilt by all the rubbish.
“When I was growing up there was very little ‘disposable’ plastic, but now it’s impossible to avoid and loads of it ends up on our streets, in our countryside and eventually on the beaches, in the rivers and sea.
“If animals eat it or get caught up in it, it can cause a slow and painful death, and some plastics will never degrade – in 1,000 years they will still be there. It’s a symptom of a bigger global problem where we’re completely trashing the only home we’ve got."
Anyone who would like to get involved in the litter-pick at the Plas at 10am on 8 April, can contact Jacinta on 01654 702890 or by email at [email protected].
