The Aberystwyth community is being invited to join hands in attempts to set a new world record.
On St David’s Day, Sunday, 1 March, a group of people will be attempting achieve the Guinness World Record title for the Longest Human Archway Relay, which is a title not currently held by anyone.
Guinness World Records and S4C are working in partnership to complete record attempts across Wales on St David’s Day, 1 March, to “celebrate Wales and its strong community”.
The final record attempt of the day will take part on Aberystwyth promenade and will see the local community attempting a world record for the Longest Human Archway Relay.
This will entail people joining hands to create an archway as two people at a time run, skip, hop or dance under the archway, finishing with the Aberystwyth tradition of kicking the bar.
Orchard Media and Events, who are organising the event, are appealing to the community to join together and take part in this attempt. They are asking for at least 300 people to take part.
Due to strict guidelines set by Guinness World Records, the official attempt will be open to those aged eight and above.
The event will take place at Marine Terrace on 1 March at 3pm, with registration taking place inside the Marine Hotel.
Jess Davies, who works as a researcher in the Orchard Media and Events production team, said: “Aberystwyth has been chosen as the end destination for the special celebrations due to its lovely community and iconic views, and so we really want to make this a special event for all!”
Assistant producer at Orchard Media and Events Gareth Delve said: “The reason we’ve gone for this record is to celebrate the theme of the National Eisteddfod which will be coming to Tregaron this summer.
“The message we are trying to get across is one of the unity and everybody working as one. So the hands coming together in the arch symbolises the coming together of people.”
Head of communication for the Eisteddfod Gwenllian Carr said: “The Eisteddfod team here in Ceredigion is delighted to be part of this attempt to break a world record. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to join in and show the strength of our community and how everyone can work together.”
Online content commissioner for S4C Rhodri ap Dyfrig also said: “It’s exciting for S4C to work alongside Guinness World Records in a series of World Record attempts that will be broadcast digitally to the world on St David’s Day.
“We intend to break several records throughout the day in various areas across Wales before ending in Aberystwyth for the Guinness World Record attempt at forming the largest human archway."
