The original plans for Bow Street railway station showed a roundabout, later changed to a staggered junction. Why?
I drive an artic lorry, 44-ton, 55 feet long. Most large HGVs come via Bow Street on the A487 and turn left onto the A4159 heading for the A44.
This was easy with the old angled junction, as you were in a 30mph limit and needed to only slow slightly for the turn.
Now it is a 90-degree turn, meaning you have to slow almost to a stop. If anything is coming from Aberystwyth, you cannot go onto the opposite side of the road to make the turn. However if you keep to the left and there is traffic at the junction turning right, you do not have enough room to make the turn. This will be fun during heavy holiday traffic.
On the old junction if you were coming out of it to turn right it was easy, as it was angled. Now, again, it is a 90-degree turn meaning an artic has to go straight across the road to the other side before turning so the trailer wheels do not mount the kerb on the right. If an HGV is also at the junction turning left, there is the added danger that the rear of the trailers could actually come into contact with each other.
It is very badly thought out and executed and will cause problems in holiday season.
