A GARNDOLBENMAEN mother of two has bravely shaved her hair off to raise over £3,000 for charity.
Karen Vaughan McClelland faced the shaver at a fund-raising event in her home village last weekend.
The 42-year-old is raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support after three of her family members were diagnosed with cancer.
Her husband, Mike, was diagnosed with stomach cancer four years ago and has recently undergone two major operations as part of his treatment.
Karen said: “Three members of my family are currently suffering with cancer.
“One is my husband and another is my niece, Donna McClelland, who was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer which has now spread to her liver, bones and lungs.
“My adopted father-in-law Dafydd Plwm was also diagnosed with the same cancer my husband has.
“I thought it was important for me to raise money for Macmillan as they have provided our family with incredible support throughout this difficult time.
“Having loved ones who are suffering with this terrible disease makes you realise how precious life is, but sadly how short it can also be.
“Macmillan has been there throughout – they have become our best friends and always there when we need support.”
Karen shaved her hair off in front of a packed-out Cross Foxes Inn and has so far managed to raise over £3,000.
“It didn’t bother me at all shaving off all my hair, I’m a very bubbly person and always up for a laugh so I wasn’t phased by it at all.
“I was overwhelmed by the amount of people who turned up to support the event, but it was extra special for me to have my husband, Donna and Dafydd there with me.
“They were my inspiration on the night and it wouldn’t have been the same if they weren’t there.
“I’ve also had great support from my children, Danny and Shaun, and also my little granddaughter Violet-Rose.
“I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported me and donated. I’m so glad we are able to give back to such an amazing charity.”
