A Gwynedd kickboxer has been competing to raise money for a defibrillator on the road between Rhydymain and Bala.

Dave Hughes, 34, started raising money in January and his current total stands at £850. He hopes to raise the £1,500 needed to get a public defibrillator from Welsh Hearts.

Dave is a personal trainer, gym owner and martial arts coach. He has held open days and taken part in kickboxing fights, in addition to online fundraising, to raise the funds for the defibrillator.

The defibrillator will be situated by Hufenfa Storage units on the road between Rhydymain and Bala. Dave owns a business, Alpha Unit Training, in the same area as the proposed location for the defibrillator.

Dave said: “We realised that there wasn’t one within 10 minutes of us, and you have a 10-minute slot to save a life. So we want to raise the £1,500 needed to get one from Welsh Hearts to put out front so it can be used by anyone; the local community, businesses or anyone passing.”

Sharon, from Welsh Hearts, said: “It’s fantastic that more people and communities are getting on board now. They realise how important these defibrillators are. It’s so important. These communities are so remote by the time the ambulance gets there, the person doesn’t have a hope. By the communities getting these defibrillators we can save lives.”
