THE CURATOR of Ceredigion Museum, Carrie Canham was the guest speaker at the October meeting, her Powerpoint presentation was entiled Past, Present and Future.
She told the story of how the museum came to be, opening in its temporary premises in 1972 at Vulcan St, Aberystwyth, with the late Dr John Owen at the helm; the Coliseum Theatre was then suggested, and a grand opening was held in 1982. Michael Freeman, having been Dr Owen’s deputy for seven years, became curator in 1990, and developed the educational side of the museum, connecting with all areas in the county.
Carrie Canham followed in 2012 as curator as the museum celebrated its 40th anniversary, and historical events have taken place in many places since 2013.By today, a huge project is in hand to extend the premises, and on thanking Carrie for her interesting talk, Selwyn Walters, chairman, wished Ceredigion Museum well for the future.
During the evening, members took part in an informal quiz, guessing what the artefacts Carrie had brought with her were. During October, an interesting day had been organized by Gaenor Parry, in following the trail of the Romans in the area.Professors Barrie Burnham and David Austin were the leaders, pointing out landmarks en-route from Llanfair Clydogau to Pump-saint, and giving details of excavations that have taken place since the 1970s.
Elfyn Davies gave an account of local place-names and their significance.Selwyn thanked Gaenor. The next meeting will be on Tues-day, 17 November, when Selwyn Walters will be talking about Lampeter’s contribution to Welsh rugby. Croeso cynnes i bawb, all welcomed.
The Cymdeithas Hanes 2016 Calendar is now on sale, and will be available at the Christmas Fair on 28 November. The grand raffle that will benefit the museum, will also be drawn on the day.
