Earth Hour
AS PART of the World Wildlife Foundation’s forthcoming Earth Hour initiative, Community Music Wales has been commissioned to hold a series of creative workshops in Lampeter to raise awareness of the campaign which will see millions of people turn out their lights to show their care for the planet. The free workshops begin on Monday, 29 February, running for three consecutive weeks in Victoria Hall. Three types of class are available to choose from, including singing, 6.30pm to 8pm; African drumming, 7.30pm to 9pm; and Soundscape, 6pm to 7.30pm, which offers a unique insight into using mobile devices to make collaborative recordings from the natural environment. On Saturday, 12 March, from 2pm to 5pm, a one-off lantern making event will also be held to create the atmospheric lighting that will be used in the Earth Hour performance the following week. All materials will be provided and as many participants as possible are encouraged to attend to make the most amount of lanterns possible for the show.Charity organisation Community Music Wales, now in its 23rd year of inspiring groups and individuals, is not only leading the creative sessions in Lampeter, but also encouraging people from across Wales to participate in Earth Hour, as well as uploading sounds from their own communities to the inter-active sound map called MapSain at www.communitymusicwales.co.uk/mapsain.The official “switch off” takes place on Saturday, 19 March, at 8.30pm. The day will be marked by a celebration at Victoria Hall where refreshments will be available in the Mulberry Bush Café from 7pm. The culmination of the workshops will be marked by a performance, lit only by the hand-made lanterns, from 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend the workshops and performance, but those who cannot are encouraged to share their own activities on social media using the hashtag #LightsOutCymru.Further information about the workshops and switch-off can be found at the website at www. communitymusicwales.co.uk/EarthHour or by contacting [email protected]
Merry Makers
THE MERRY Makers’ women’s group holds a number of activities for women of all ages . Now in its 18th year, the group came about after a 20/20 vision course run by Gillian Metcalfe and Lucy Evans. At the end of the course the women wanted to keep in touch with each other and carry on with creative activities.Originally called The Women’s Workshop the group changed its name last year as they felt it did not express all that they did. As friendship and laughter seemed to be a large part of the day the name Merry Makers was chosen. On offer every week are creative activities such as writing, paint-ing, singing, knitting, crochet and crafts. At least once a term there is a play reading session, which is proving very popular, and there are also visits from people who give talks and demonstrations. Recently, Leonora, a Dementia Friend Ambassador, gave the group an illuminating talk, and several members have joined Dem-entia Friends as a result. February also included a painting class led by an artist and an unusual pancake-making session. There is a wide range of ages in the group and no-one is too old to join. There is no joining fee or annual subscription, just £2.50 for each ses-sion attended, paid on the day. This fee is deliberately kept low so that it is accessible to all women; a vegetarian lunch is included in the price. The Merry Makers are a self-funding group and subsidise the fee through selling their crafts at Christmas events. The group meets on Wednesdays from 10.30am to 3pm at St James’ Hall, Cwmann, and welcomes new women members of any age. The hall has disabled access and toilets, and free parking. The bus will stop outside the hall. Members come from the Lampeter area and also from Llandysul, Aberaeron, and Aberystwyth. For more details, contact Bella on 01559 370981.
