THERE was an excellent attendance at the March meeting where everyone was welcomed by Selwyn Walters, chairman. The theme for the evening was Lampeter public houses – a collection put together under the Pint of History, Please project – that itself comes under the Cynefin project of digitising maps. Many of those in attendance were amazed to hear that more than 40 public houses, inns and hotels were found during the project, although not all were present at the same time. Now, Lampeter has only a handful that are still open.A few words were said about each one, but the purpose of the project is to get the community involved in bringing in their recollections and stories of what they remember about their locals. The 1905 returns of public houses to the Petty Sessions, gave an interesting account of the stabling of horses, and whether pubs were open for six or seven days a week.If anybody can recall when certain pubs closed or opened, who the landlords were etc, pop into the museum. Messages can also be left through the Hanes Llambed website. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, 19 April, at 7.30pm in the Old Hall of the university, when Barbara Jones will be giving an account of her father, Watkin Evan Jones (Churchill, Bryn Rd), and his Seafaring Days.
Museum
THE MUSEUM has now reopened for the 2016 season.Friends of the museum were invited on Monday evening, 21 March, for a preview of the new collections being displayed and was well attended. The response was quite infectious, with people moving from one collection to the other and telling others to go and see this and that. They were also served with light refreshments, which added to the informality of the evening. The official opening took place the following day and a steady trickle of visitors have already been in over the Easter holidays.Opening days from now until the end of October are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10am to 4 pm.
