RamblersWE HAD perfect walking weather to embark upon the long section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path be-tween St Brides Haven and Dale on 13 August, led by Ron and Mean Foulkes. A warm dry day with a cool sea breezes eased the miles away passing Musselwick Sands and to Wooltack Point where the boats sail to Skomer Island from St Mar-tin’s Haven. Onward to St Anne’s Head the path meanders its way keeping close to the cliffs overlooking inaccessible inlets and bays with intriguing names as Deadman’s Bay, then dipping down to sandy beaches reached only by foot and bridle paths.Approaching Dale brings walkers to the southern and western section of the perimeter track surrounding Dale Airfield. Opened in 1942 the base was used by the frontline No 304 (Polish) Squadron and later used by the Royal Navy. From here it is only a mile cross country to Dale but the coastal walk winds its way for another five miles or so around St Anne’s point with its lighthouse at the entrance of the giant harbour of Milford Haven. Nearby is Mill Bay where a plaque reminds walkers of Henry Tudor’s landing there on 7 August 1485 from his exile in France and to his infamous march to Bosworth. On Saturday, 6 August, the group enjoyed a different sort of ramble in the heart of Wales at Rhayadr, led by James Williams, follow-ing the Wye Valley Walk as far as Llanwrthwl. Here the route turned away from the lush river valley to ascend Gwastedyn Hill, said to be named after a former township in Nantmel parish.Literally translated to ‘small flat place’ the hill defies its name by rising to two points, Carn Fach and Carn Wen.Next Saturday the Ramblers welcome you along to our walk fol-lowing bridlepaths in the area near Llangeitho.
