PLANS to honour one of Llanbadarn’s most heroic sons with a commemorative stone next month have been discussed by Ceredigion County Council.
Brigadier Lewis Pugh Evans – the only Ceredigion-born soldier to have received the Victoria Cross (VC) – will be memorialised in a ceremony on 4 October, exactly 100 years since he received his VC medal.
Bgdr Evans single-handedly knocked out a machine gun and led an assault on 4 October 1917 during the horrific Battle of Passchendaele which resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives.
Bgdr Evans, who was born in Abermad in 1881, is already commemorated on a stone plaque in Llanbadarn for his part in the battle, which he survived – but now will receive a commemorative stone as part of a nation-wide initiative to honour all recipients of the VC.
The council will host the event to lay the commemorative stone next month.
It follows a move in August 2013 by then-Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to honour all VC recipients from the First World War.
Commemorative paving stones will be laid in the birth place of all VC recipients throughout the UK to “honour their bravery; provide a lasting legacy of local heroes within communities; and enable residents to gain a greater understanding of how their area fitted into the First World War story.”
The council said it would work with relatives and the local community to finalise plans for the stone and the event.
