BLEARY-EYED residents have complained that work on the Tesco and Marks & Spencer development in Aberystwyth is keeping them awake at night.
One condition of the planning permission was that works could only take place between 7am and 6pm on weekdays and between 8am and 4pm on Saturdays, with no work allowed on Sundays and Bank Holidays “unless otherwise agreed” with Ceredigion County Council’s planning department.
Aberystwyth councillor Ceredig Davies has told the Cambrian News he has received a number of complaints from people living near the site complaining that work has been taking place late at night.
Cllr Davies said: “People have been complaining that constructors are working late at night.
“I have made some enquiries and my understanding is that the contractors asked the council about it because they had to do some concrete laying late at night.
“They were given an instruction to let people know about the late-night works, but the people I have spoken to haven’t received a letter.”
A county council spokesperson said: “The council is aware that some of the building activities and hours of working may have been causing disturbance to individuals living in the vicinity of the development on Mill Street.
“Further investigations will be undertaken to identify the nature and scale of the alleged problems and appropriate action will be taken if necessary, to ensure that local residents are not being unreasonably inconvenienced by building works.
“It is hoped that reasonable compromises can be identified and that effective solutions can be implemented for the remainder of the construction phase.”
A Lagan spokesperson said: “Lagan Building Contractors can confirm that Environmental Health were notified of the unexpected late-night works which took place.
“For further late-night works, Lagan Building Contractors will carry out a letter drop to the local residents. We anticipate that late-night works will be minimal in the future.
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the local residents for their patience to date and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
