A LAMPETER councillor wants the town to “trumpet throughout the world” the fact it has officially been acknowledged as the birthplace of Welsh rugby.

Cllr Selwyn Walters feels last week’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of the first competitive rugby match ever played in Wales could lead to a major tourism boost for Lampeter.

The historic match was held on the university’s playing fields between St David’s College (now University of Wales Trinity St David) and nearby Llandovery College in 1866.

And Cllr Walters told town council colleagues: “This is a God-given opportunity that we have been given and I think it would be very foolish if we didn’t take this on board.

“Lampeter had now been officially been recognised as the birthplace of Welsh rugby and it is encumbent on us to spread the word."
