Horse-drawn carriage trips along Aberystwyth’s promenade could be on offer in the future if the council decides to change its licensing policy.

A consultation was held in August on the possibility of amending licensing policy to include horse drawn carriage in Ceredigion.

Members of the licensing committee heard last Thursday that here had been around 200 responses to the consultation which was prompted by an expression of interest in operating a horse drawn carriage along the promenade.

The draft policy consulted on included the licensing of horse drawn hackney carriages, a designated route between New Promenade and Marine Terrace, the variation of a taxi rank to permit only horse drawn carriages at certain times and amendments to the licensing policy to incorporate changes in legislation.

Cllr John Roberts said it would be an “excellent business” for Aberystwyth and would draw people to the town while Cllr Gareth Davies said he was “a bit sceptical of this plan, if the majority of the public are saying they don’t want it I don’t see why we would say we want it.”

“What’s the point of going out to consultation if we are not listening to the opinion of the public,” he added, as well as raising concerns about health and safety.

The formal report of the consultation will be brought to the next licensing committee, as well as to scrutiny committee, so members were advised on Thursday not to make a decision on the matter.
