AN ABERYSTWYTH lifeguard is hoping to raise enough money to travel to Greece to help save the lives of refugees making perilous journeys across the sea.

Megan Turner, 20, has worked as an RNLI Lifeguard on the beaches of Ceredigion for four years and has been a member of Aberystwyth Surf Lifesaving Club since she was seven years old.

Now, Megan, who is currently studying languages at Swansea University, said she wants to lend her skills to help with the International Surf Lifesaving Association’s humanitarian mission on the Greek island of Lesvos, where refugees fleeing the war in Syria are making the often fateful trip in the hope of reaching Europe.

“I personally feel quite strongly about it,” Megan told the Cambrian News this week, reflecting on the images she has seen on television.

“It has bugged me that it is going on, and I can help because I have the skills to be able to help.”

Despite being involved in several rescues during her time as a lifeguard on Ceredigion’s relatively safe beaches, Megan said it is impossible to prepare for what she will witness.

“I am definitely not ready for what I am going to see, but I’m going with the mind set that it is going to be difficult because it is a fact which you can’t really ignore,” she told the Cambrian News.

“I have mentally prepared for it, but it doesn’t feel real yet.”To donate, visit Megan’s crowdfunding page: http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/lifesaving-aid-to-syrian-refugees/
