JOAN Yates, president, welcomed members and guest speakers to the spring WI meetings held monthly in the Neuadd. Val Hayes provided updates on the financial state and Lonna Bradley accompanied the singing on the piano.Members enjoyed a variety of talks:Dylan Davies stressed the importance of recycling and encouraged them to make the maximum use of the facilities provided by Gwynedd Council. In June they had a talk from Emma Quacek who made them aware of the symptoms of dementia and suggested that we might consider becoming a ‘Dementia Friend’ and Denise Davingoff highlighted issues about being a witness in court. They had a wonderful day out in August when they visited Aber Artro Hall and Gardens and were conducted on a tour of the estate by the enthusiastic owner Paul Morgan. He guided members through the stunning Arts and Crafts house, built in 1910, pointing out various features such as the William Morris wallpaper and the Renne Mackin-tosh furniture. The Cooke family of Penrhyndeudraeth once owned the Hall and it was interesting to see some of the spectacular lighting they had introduced. In the garden they strolled along the riverside walk passing Mrs Cooke’s ponds.Mr and Mrs Morgan have introduced some garden rooms among which is a rose garden in the shape of a hexagon in place of the old tennis court. There is an Italian courtyard and a Japanese garden to enjoy as well. Vegetables thrive in the kitchen garden. The planting is beautiful and the layout is in complete harmony with the magnificent house. The tour completed, they adjourned to the tea house where we enjoyed a cuppa and some delicious home made cakes.Members thanked Mr Morgan.
