St Mary’s Church

IMPROVEMENTS to the interior of St Mary’s Church have been completed. They have centred on improving the lighting and heating. Various lights have been lowered from high positions so that they are closer to the congregation. Six wall mounted electric heaters have been replaced by more efficient units and repositioned so as to provide greater heat.

Capel Mair

WORK has been undertaken to repaint the inside of Capel Mair.

Christmas Carol service

THE annual bilingual carol service for the village took place in St Mary’s Church. There was a good attendance. Rev Bill Fillery led the service. A number of local children made a contribution, having been prepared by Aerwen Griffiths and Heini Thomas. Various residents undertook Bible readings. The collection was added to the amount raised from carol singing across the parish, which had taken place over two nights, with the intention of making a donation to help the family of a local farmer who had had a very serious accident. The total amount raised was £600.

Community council

THE community council has taken a decision to buy a grit box for a steep section of Sarn Helen. It has been installed just higher than Pentrebannau.

Bridge repairs

RESIDENTS have been pleased to see that the collapsed wall alongside the road bridge over the River Clywedog has been repaired by the county council following a crash. Work is still awaited to repair deteriorating stone work on the Teifi bridge.

Golden Broth Club

THE Llanfair and Cellan club held a well-attended Christmas lunch in Llanfair Hall. Those attending were very appreciative of the food and games. Chris Lambert proposed a vote of thanks to organisers Linda Quelch and Amanda Newman for their hard work.

Storm damage

STORM Frank brought heavy rain and wind to the area. One large tree was blown down and blocked the upland road between Glan Rhyd and Oxen Hall which was closed for a time. It was removed by volunteers.

Short-mat bowls

THE bowling team recently played an away match against Llanilar bowls club. The result was a Llanfair defeat at the hands of the more experienced opposition, but saw a considerably improved performance by the village’s team from the last occasion the two teams had met.

Broadband

CONTRACTORS have been evident in recent weeks cutting down trees and branches close to overhead telephone lines as preparatory work for overhead cable replacement. BT as the line provider has a plan to put into place, on the telephone poles, new optical fibre with the aim of improving broadband speeds. There is considerable interest in seeing the work being undertaken as many households have low broadband speeds and are keen to secure an upgrade. As yet a date is awaited for fibre optic broadband availability.
