Christian Aid Christmas Appeal
HUW THOMAS, head of Christian Aid in Wales, sounded an optimistic note as he delivered the charity’s Christmas Appeal during a concert at the village hall. He referred to the major challenge of dealing with one of the world’s deadliest diseases namely malaria. It is a leading cause of death in Nigeria, with an estimated 250,000 children dying every year.“Through our partners, we are tackling malaria via education and prevention programmes, training health agents and nurses. Partners are responsible for the supply of lifesaving mosquito nets,” he said.“An insecticide-treated bed net costs just a few pounds while £15 could help to buy 5 nets. Only 30 per cent of those with nets sleep under them. This is where behaviour change is vital. Our education work is very important,” he added.Every gift received by Christian Aid between now and 5 February 2016 is set to be matched by the UK Government which will help to save even more lives.Côr Glannau Ystwyth, conducted by Delyth Hopkins Evans, provided the evening’s entertainment at the special concert which marked Christian Aid’s 70th anniversary year. It proved to be a musical and literary treat as the choir along with various members served up a miscellany of choral delights. Meanwhile the choir’s accompanist, Gwyneth Davies, also displayed her acting talent when she presented a captivating extract from Under Milk Wood to an appreciative audience. The sterling efforts of local volunteers were boosted by a generous donation to Christian Aid’s Christmas Appeal on behalf of the choir’s members. “We are extremely grateful for this kind gesture and wish to extend our sincere gratitude to all involved with Côr Glannau Ystwyth for their support,” commented one of the fund-raisers.
