Noah’s Ark Appeal

THE LLANIDLOES Committee of the Noah’s Ark Appeal announced the winners of the Christmas raffle, drawn on Saturday, 12 December, at the Red Lion.The winners were as follows: 1, Carol Pugh, Llanidloes; 2, Julie Jones, Caersws; 3, Hafan, Carno Club; 4, Sarah Rees, Llanidloes; 5, Martin Owen, Llanidloes; 6, C Thomas, Abermule; 7, Margaret, Llanidloes; 8, Rachael, Newtown; 9, Alan Humphries, Carno; 10, D Morgan, Llawr y Glyn.The committee thanked everyone who supported the appeal, the ticket sellers for their help and all who donated prizes.

Only Legs Aloud Christmas party

WITH a very warm greeting by the management of Maesmawr, Caersws, on Saturday, 5 December, the Only Legs Aloud Club celebrated its fifth annual Christmas party.

Soundbites

THE LAST Soundbites event took place in the Great Oak Café on Saturday, 14 November. It starred Will Killeen with support acts from Sinead Hegarty and Y Trefnydd a Chwmni. Soundbites, which took place every two months, was a performance event which afforded opportunities for new and experienced adult performers and for young performers from the local schools. It provided a small and friendly venue with a supportive and appreciative audience.Over the last seven years a wide variety of material has been performed including music, poetry, storytelling, film and drama.Soundbites is ending as the main organiser Andy Warren wants to have a break after seven years, but he is happy to assist anybody else in taking it forward.Andy thanked Glenn Ashbrooke, Jean Pegg, and Gerry Collins (the previous proprietor of The Great Oak Café) and all the other people who have helped make Soundbites a success.He also thanked the Wales Art Council and Compton’s Yard Charitable Trust who have helped support and fund the event.

Christmas church activities

ON WEDNESDAY, 23 December, from 10.30am to noon, Cytun will be holding carol singing in the CoOperative supermarket.On Christmas Eve there will be Mass at 8pm at the Catholic Church in Pen y Green Road, with the celebrant Fr Damian Jackson SJ.Also on Christmas Eve, at 5pm there will be a Crib Service for the family at St Idloes Church followed by carols at 7.30pm.At 11.15pm, Cytun is holding a Midnight Communion Service at Longbridge Street Chapel.On Christmas Day at 10am, Cytun presents a United Christmas Morning Communion Service at Llanidloes Parish Church.At the Baptist Church at 10am there will be a Christmas Service.On Saturday, 26 December, at 4pm there will be Mass at the Catholic Church in Pen y Green Road.Sunday, 27 December: Baptist Church Services, 10.30am to 6pm; 10.45am, Quaker Meeting at Trinity School Room; 11am, Morning Service at St Idloes Church; 11am, Morning Service at Trinity.

Poppy Appeal

THE LLANIDLOES branch of the Women’s Section of the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal organiser wish to thank all who helped raise £3,683. They gave special thanks to the Army Cadets for the street collection, Trudy for her range of activities, the Coop who allowed them two days to collect, the house-to-house collectors, Francis, Carolyn and Lisa and all the premises who had boxes. Finally, they said the collection would not be so high if people had not put into the boxes, bought the items or given in the two church collections.

Arwystli Society

ON WEDNESDAY, 18 November, Jeff Spencer, officer ClwydPowys Archaeological Trust, gave a lecture to members of the society.Assisted by a fascinating history shown on screen, he showed the impact of the Great Wars on the Welsh landscape and the changes that took place in agriculture and forestry, and the industries that were expanded and adapted.Following a lively question time, Jeff was thanked warmly for his considerable knowledge and inspiring presentation and members said they hoped he would return again next season to St Idloes Church Hall.
