THE chairperson opened the October meeting with a welcome to 19 members, apologies were received from six others.

The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as correct. Matters arising and correspondence were dealt with, and the speaker for the evening was introduced.

Isobel McCrindle lives in Buckinghamshire but has had a holiday home in the village for many years. Her mother began a nursery business many years ago, and Isobel has worked alongside her for almost 30 years. Though now 85 years old, her mother still sows the seeds.

Isobel’s demonstration was about planting-up baskets for winter display. The container was lined to the lower sides with a very generous layer of moss.

Next, a square of perforated plastic was placed over the base, this helps to retain water which would otherwise freely drain in the course of regular watering, but prevents water-logging in inclement weather. Next, compost and plant food were added.

A liberal number of robust pansy plants were arranged through the frame of the basket, and the process repeated, building up the sides.

Miniature daffodils were pushed down into the compost randomly, then some crocus bulbs, and finally a centrally-placed skimmia plant.

Quite soon, these plants would flourish and reward with a very pleasing feature. Isobel then planted up a small trough using two small heather plants, infilling with pansies and Red Riding Hood tulips to flower later on.

These bulbs, and small variegated ivy plants, would add additional foliage interest. Both basket and trough were offered as raffle prizes.

A well-deserved round of applause and a vote of thanks was given by Nia Webster concluded the demonstration, and the evening ended with refreshments and chat.

The final meeting of the season is the AGM on Wednesday, 4 November, at 7pm in Y Ganolfan.
