THE CLUB meeting held on 2 March was chaired by Jane Shutt, with 15 members were in attendance. Apologies were received from seven others. The cost of hiring a coach for the outing had been obtained and the date set for Thursday, 9 June. The speaker for the evening was introduced.Dylan Davies is a waste and recycling officer, one of three who oversee this task throughout Gwynedd. He is guided by the Euro Landfill Directive, the rules being stricter for Wales and Scotland than England. By some standards our recycling targets are good, but by 2020 we will need to recycle 64 per cent of our refuse. Mr Davies demonstrated the new recycling system, stacking boxes on a trolley. There are also single-fill lidded boxes for tins, glass, paper and plastic. There are seven numbered plastics which are recycled. The former depot at Harlech is now closed and has been replaced by one at Wrexham, he said. A small brown caddy box can be provided and a larger version for food waste, along with appropriate biodegradeable lining bags. The waste contents are mixed with organic material, treated, then left for a few weeks, producing a supply of compost. Food waste can also provide biogas by an anaerobic system (excluding oxygen), the remains are then sterilised and can be applied to farmland. Mr Davies obliged in answering several questions, after which a vote of thanks was given by Christine Mark, and refreshments were served. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 6 April, at 7pm in Y Ganolfan, when the local crime officer will talk about garden and countryside security. Visitors and new members welcome.
