THOUGHTFUL Meirionnydd residents are considering the possibility of offering free holidays to those affected by last week’s Grenfell Tower catastrophe.
On Sunday, members of the local community gathered for a beach picnic at Llandanwg in the spirit of ‘hope, not hate’.
The event was in memory of Jo Cox, Labour MP who was tragically murdered a year ago.
At the event, the possibility of local people offering to host families affected by the Grenfell Tower conflagration for a week’s holiday was also raised.
The fire, which gutted a residential block in London and cost at least 80 people their lives, has rocked the UK and left numerous families homeless.
Rosy Berry, one of the key organisers of the beach picnic, said: “Elaine Evans felt that as there are so many homes around here and many of us have spare rooms, that it might be possible to offer a free holiday and transport from London for everyone affected by the awful tragedy.
“Others agreed and are looking in to possibility of organising this.
“Obviously, the more people that are involved in organising it, the easier this will be.
“I intend to raise the idea at this Saturday’s Labour Party meeting.”
Ms Evans, who initially conceived of the idea of helping displaced Grenfell Tower residents, added: “I think Rosy has summed up my feelings. Basically I felt we live in a beautiful area, Harlech, and a way of helping those affected by the fire would be to offer a week’s holiday, possibly at the end of August.
“We will also do our best and try and organise transport for the victims via Express Coaches or Arriva trains.
“A great deal of organising to be done, but I think it’s doable.”
