Madam,

I am writing concerning the plans of CB Environ-mental to site a smelting furnace on the Glanyrafon Industrial Estate. They have applied for an Environmental Permit from Ceredigion County Council. I find the location of the furnace a surprise. Whilst modern smelting furnaces are carefully controlled and can meet the current environmental regulations, the concern here is what happens if there is a failure, even a minor one. This furnace would be situated a few hundred metres from an Organic Yoghurt factory. There must also be concerns over Aberystwyth’s water supply, some of which is extracted from this area. Perhaps a possible alternative would be to locate the smelting furnace on one of the old brown field mining sites out up in the hills.

Yours etc,J W Davies, Borth.
