CALLS have been renewed for a Llanystumdwy museum honouring the only Welshman to become Prime Minister to be taken over by a Trust or the National Museum of Wales amid funding issues.
The Lloyd George Museum, near Criccieth, has been a victim of Gwynedd Council cuts and will lose its £27,000 annual grant from April this year.
That gap was plugged after then-Chancellor George Osborne agreed in last year’s budget to pay the same grant money from central Westminster coffers until 2020.
While the Friends of the Lloyd George Museum charity welcomed the funding, trustees have said that it is “still in danger of closing” if a long-term solution can’t be found.
David Lloyd George’s great-niece Elizabeth George - a trustee of the charity - said: “The future of the museum is in danger.
“Nothing is certain after 2020.
“I would like to see a Trust taking over its running.”
Publicly-available Charity Commission figures show the Friends of the Lloyd George Museum have lost just under £10,000 between 2011 and 2015.
Figures for 2016 are not available.
