TWO LONG-SERVING and ded-icated members of the Machynlleth and District Committee of North West Cancer Research received glowing tributes from the chairman and members at the group’s AGM on Thursday, 22 October.Standing down from their committee work, Glenys Lewis (21 years) and Iris Davies (11 years) were praised by chairman Geraint Jones for their loyalty and commitment to fund-raising, which had seen the group raise and donate £19,200 for cancer research over the last three years.

Welcoming members to the White Lion Hotel, Geraint said how much they all valued the dedication of officers, committee, all those who give of their time outside of the committee and the people of the Dyfi Valley for their inspiration and support. He also sent get well messages to members who were in hospital or had been hospitalised or were recovering at home.

Alwena Price (treasurer) and Meinir Davies (secretary) jointly reported on the year of fund-raising.Members gave their appreciation to Alwena and Meinir for their work preparing the acc ounts. The members heard that, for the financial year 2014/15, £7,300 had been forwarded for continuing vital research at Bangor, Liverpool and Lancaster Universities. Funds raised at the annual cof-fee morning totalled £1,090.65.

Other donations included Richard Lumley’s donation of Galata coins (£120), three Corris whist drives (£667), Ysgol Bro Hyddgen Christmas Fair sale of cakes (£43.70), street collection (£762.84) and Machynlleth Golf Club competitions (£60). In memory donations totalled £4,455.70. Alwena and Meinir reported that a start had already been made towards funding for the next financial year. The coffee morning on 3 October had raised £1,311.85, more than £200 up on the last financial year.

A letter of thanks had been received from the head office, expressing sincere thanks and gratitude for the donation.The letter went on to say that funding is running between £1m and £1.5m per year, an impressive amount, which is mainly due to the committees.

These funds will help finance cancer research projects across the region in research centres in the Universities of Bangor, Lancaster and Liverpool.

Committee: Mesdames Eluned Besent, Doreen Ellis, Eryl Evans, Ross Evans, Alice Hughes, Hilda Humphreys, Teleri Humphreys, Ann Lloyd Jones, Audrey Bebb Evans, Bronwen Jones, Catrin Jones, Ann Owen, Ann Parry; and Messrs Huw Lawton Davies and Michael Williams.Initial arrangements were made for two annual events.

The house-to-house/street collection on 7 to 13 August and the coffee morning on Saturday, 1 October.

It was also agreed to consider further events in due course.

Police surgeries

DYFED-POWYS Police hold mobile surgeries at three locations in the Dyfi Valley on the first and third Friday of each month.Whether you have a query or would like to meet some of the of-ficers, the neighbourhood policing team will be available to speak to at Llanbrynmair car park, 10am to 11am; Glantwymyn Community Centre car park, 11.30am to 12.30pm and Heol Maengwyn car park from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.
