Garden Club

MACHYNLLETH and District Garden Club hold their next meeting on Tuesday, 3 May, at Machynlleth Bowling Club, starting at 7.30pm. There will be a talk and demonstration on hanging baskets. The speaker will be Mr Mahon of Kerrimeg Nursery, Carno, a stallholder at Machynlleth Market. Hear to Help

THE next Hear to Help drop-in clinic in Machynlleth is on Friday, 6 May, at the Care Centre, Forge Road, from 10am to midday. NHS hearing-aid wearers can visit this Action on Hearing Loss Cymru service for friendly advice on their hearing aids, and for cleaning, new tubes, batteries and basic maintenance. The clinic is run by trained volunteers on the first Friday of each month.

Bring and buy

CLWB Maglona – Bro Ddyfi Senior Citizens – will be holding a bring and buy sale as part of its next meeting at the bowling club on Thursday, 28 April, at 2pm.

LLEW Coch A, crowned Division One champions after they comfortably saw off Bowling Club 13-2 in their penultimate Machynlleth and District Pool League fixture, suffered their second defeat of the season at home to a resurgent Dwynant by eight frames to seven.The division’s runners-up, White Lion, also tasted defeat as they slumped to a 9-6 reversal at Trede-gar Arms.Rugby Club A made it a hat-trick of defeats for the top three teams, edging an 8-7 victory at third-placed Skinners A.Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, White Horse recorded a convincing 10-5 victory at rel-egated Rugby Club B and Bowling Club stayed out of the relegation zone with an equally convincing 10-5 score away to relegated Llew Coch B.Final table: Llew Coch A (48 points), White Lion (42), Skinners A (39), Tredegar Arms (39), Rugby Club A (33), White Horse (18), Dwynant (18), Bowling Club (15), Llew Coch B (9), Rugby Club B (9).Storming to a 12-3 home victory over third-placed Foresters, Y Llew Coch Dinas left it late to snatch the second division title on frame difference from also promoted Rugby Club C, who kept the title-race open thanks to a 9-6 verdict at home to Skinners B.Wynnstay Llanbrynmair complet-ed a 15-0 whitewash over visitors Llew Coch Ladies and, completing the league’s fixtures, Penrhos beat home team White Lion Ladies by nine frames to six.Final table: Y Llew Coch Dinas (36 points), Rugby Club C (36), For-esters (33), Slaters (30), Skinners B (30), Wynnstay Llanbrynmair (27), Penrhos (15), Llew Coch Ladies (9), White Lion Ladies (0).

Bowls

ON Saturday, 23 April, club president Michael Williams delivered the afternoon’s first bowl to officially launch the Machynlleth Bowling Club’s 2016 campaign. He extended his best wishes to all the bowlers for a happy and successful season. See photo above left.Prior to the opening, club captain Phil Jenkins welcomed all present and urged all the bowlers to support the teams and competitions. He then invited the president to send down the first bowl.There followed the annual RNLI Pairs competition, with all proceeds going to the Aberdyfi branch RNLI.

Free market day talk

THE excellent programme of free mid-day market day talks at the Tabernacle Museum of Modern Art Machynlleth continues on Wednesday, 11 May, starting at noon.Entitled Picturesque Wales, the talk by Rita Singer, Research Assistant at the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies, will illustrate travel accounts by continental Europeans. These accounts, from the late 18th century onwards, reflect changes in Wales and artistic trends in recording it.
