MAJOR work has begun to transform an Aberystwyth building into a fully renovated tourist information centre and museum.

The building on Terrace Road, which formerly housed a Boots store until it moved, will see a new entrance, shop, cafe and lift installed, with the work described by Ceredigion Museum curator Carrie Canham as “a very exciting time.”

Carrie said that work is “progressing well” on the alterations, with a grand opening to mark the opening of the new facilities expected at the start of summer.

The museum will close until February while the majority of work takes place.

Carrie said: “Besides creating a new entrance, combining the tourist information centre with the museum reception, building a new shop and café and installing a lift to all four floors of the museum, there will be new displays in the auditorium of the old Coliseum cinema.

“It’s a very exciting time for us here at the museum.”

The work is part of the New Approaches project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and other supporters.

Cllr Gareth Lloyd, the Cabinet member responsible for economic and community development services said: “Due to the nature of the work the museum will have to be closed for two months while some of the major alterations take place. The museum is closed until half term in February."
