Madam,

Re ‘Women struggling due to pension changes’. I would like to draw attention to the Adult Dependency Allowance, part of what used to be known as a married couple’s pension.

Any person younger than their pensioner spouse and still of working age needs to ascertain their pension position as this payment (I have been led to believe) ends on 6 April 2020. This leaves people who gave up paid work to support older spouses, be carers etc, who have not claimed for caring for elderly relatives, vulnerable.

This probably affects women who were given the assurance on marriage that they would be cared for after playing an important role within society, “the care of the extended family”.

I had not been contacted with regards to these changes and only discovered these changes in the small print of the pamphlet addressed to my husband with his pension statement. As it affected my future pension surely I should have been contacted by DWP and at least advised as to how I could rectify this problem, forced by a change of policy.

Happily I have been able to rectify my pension contributions in time to hopefully receive a full state pension in my own right and urge anyone in a similar position to contact DWP immediately to improve/or be forewarned of any inadequate pension contributions.

According to online comments many, many people are unaware of these changes and are unprepared going towards retirement.

Yours etc,

R H Williams, Llangwyryfon, Aberystwyth.
