Dyfi Valley residents should demand that Powys County Council chiefs scrap plans to axe community green waste bins and introduce a new service that would see a yearly charge for householders, a Machynlleth town councillor has insisted.
Town councillors lambasted Powys council for announcing that it was making the changes before holding a consultation.
And Cllr Michael Williams urged residents in Machynlleth and the surrounding area to respond to the consultation to “put pressure” on the county council’s Cabinet for the decision.
The decision has been heavily criticised by members of Machynlleth Town Council who warned it will lead to increased fly-tipping and that the decision to introduce a £35 yearly charge for households to have green waste collections would not be supported by residents, especially with community green waste bins being removed from community recycling sites.
Cllr Williams said he hoped that opponents to the proposal would seek to pressure the council’s Cabinet.
He said: “I hope the people who use these green bins say they should leave things are they are and leave the green waste bins in the car parks.
“The more people who do that the more pressure will be put on the Cabinet. It’s absolutely crucial that people respond in that fashion and write in the strongest possible terms.”
Cllr Monica Atkins said she was sure the county council’s decision would lead to increased fly-tipping.

The consultation will close on Sunday, 2 December.
