THE FATHER of a 24-year-old killed at a train crossing in Porthmadog has visited the town to mark the 15th anniversary of the tragedy.

John Deakin, of Rhyl, visited Porthmadog on Friday, 23 October to mark the 15th anniversary of the death of his son, Andrew, who was tragically killed at the Traeth Mawr crossing on Monday, 23 October, 2000, when the car he was driving was hit by a train.

At the time of the accident, the crossing did not have barriers, but after a lengthy campaign by Mr Deakin’s father, a barrier has since been installed.

Mr Deakin makes the emotional visit to his son’s memorial spot each year and says he’s grateful to local business, Lili Wen, who provide him with a free rose to place at the site ever year.

He said: “I can’t quite believe it has been 15 years. In general I still feel the same way I did all those years ago, I still miss him and think of him every day.

“Where would he be now? What would he be doing? Would he be married? Would he have children?"
