The unattributed letter last week about Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, Machynlleth, yet again finds me falling down that rabbit hole!Ten column inches to say the English language stream should not be allowed to plead for its retention, and should be grateful for the free opportunity to have bilingual children.
We hear of righting historical wrongs, of creating a million Welsh speakers by 2050, but not a word about why the English group might want to retain an English stream.
I am not an educationist, but common sense tells me that understanding subject concepts can be difficult enough, without the additional hurdle of language.
I was painfully shy in addressing my school class, even in my own language, and I can just imagine how an indifferent Welsh speaker would feel about addressing the class in Welsh. And the likely class response!
However, may I suggest to the English group that they submit a letter describing their concerns, and hopefully mollify the writer, and perhaps ease his sense of linguistic inequality.
