Aberystwyth Town FC welcomed back one of its “former managers” to Park Avenue after a social media interaction sparked a reunion.
Matt Baker, from the Midlands, responded to a tweet from the account of the video game Football Manager last month on Twitter, asking whether people support a football club “just because of Football Manager”.
Matt replied that he supported Aberystwyth Town, “bought the shirt and everything” but then the virtual club sacked him.
Seeing the tweet, Aberystwyth Town responded saying “the chairman’s door is always open if you want to talk things over”.
It led to a popular thread being liked by hundreds of people and to Matt visiting the club for the first time.
The 23-year-old travelled from his home in Stafford to watch Aber take on Cefn Druids on Friday, 29 November.
He even took the afternoon off work to make the trip.
In a blog written on his adventures as Aberystwyth’s manager in the game, Matt said the club were “truly fantastic”, despite the “disappointing” 3-1 defeat on the night.
“The defeat was disappointing, especially travelling three hours there and back for the game,” he said.
“The hospitality received however, was far from it.
“I’ve had the chance to write in their matchday programme, have a drink with Donald and Dai (chairman and vice-chairman), received a tour from Owain in their media team, helped word the tweet for the Aber goal and had a chat with some of the players who featured that night.
“The club were truly fantastic, all thanks to the incredibly down-to-earth people who run it.”
