Editor,

How mean can the BBC, in collusion with the government, be to deny old people the privilege of free TV? People like myself went through the austerity of World War Two and many fought in the other wars as conscripted soldiers, suffering hardships in the process.

I have already cancelled my house insurance to run a small car. I can’t walk far so a car is necessary. Since losing my best friend and wife of 56 years, TV gave me a little comfort. I have a small income with my pension which I paid into and I am sure that income will put me in the grey area above the threshold of eligibility, unlike those who have never contributed financially.

Look at some people’s way of life - owning/renting all types of electrical equipment, a car, can afford to smoke, drink alcohol etc, many living in subsidised property. They have got to be well off by my standards, and if I have to pay, so should they. If the BBC has cash-flow problems they should look at well-tried methods like other TV stations taking in adverts, or reduce viewing time similar to the 1950s-60s.

To finish I will be forced to go black and white television. I only watch free TV now so why should I pay top price for sport and game shows paying ridiculous prize money?
