Duke of Edinburgh
SINCE September last year a group of young people from the Fairbourne area have been meeting and working towards the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award. Each Monday evening the group works hard to learn new skills and complete the requirements of the award scheme. This all takes place under the watchful eye of staff from the Min y Don Christian Adventure Centre in Arthog.
So far this year the group has gained experience in volunteering and various other skills, and are now planning towards their expedition this summer.
One of the group leaders, Hilary Gyde said: ”It’s been great to see these young people work so hard and achieve so much in a fairly short period of time.“The skills they learn through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.”Co-leaders Briony Picton and Andrew Boles added: ”Many of the young people attended Ysgol Friog primary school when they were younger, because of this they got to know Min y Don and the team there very well.“Seeing these youngsters continue their involvement with something as productive as this is very rewarding and loads of fun.”
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is one of the world’s best-known and most respected achievements aimed at young people aged between 12 and 14 years old.
The team is now recruiting for any newcomers to join them this September whilst the existing group pushes on towards the next level. If you are interested in taking part in the award then go along to an information evening on 6 June in Ysgol Friog at 7pm.
