MEIRIONNYDD villages have gone ‘quackers’ for their annual duck race. Last weekend saw the Llanegryn community gather around the village bridge as over 700 plastic ducks, and several Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn teachers and pupils took to the water in the school’s popular Duck Race. Organised by Islwyn Phillips, head of technology at the comprehensive school, with the support of the schools’ Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA), the five race heats ensured the excitement was kept up throughout the evening. The evening culminated in a tense grand final before an eventual winner was crowned. Refreshments were provided by the school’s active PTFA, who also organised a very successful raffle.

Suitably dressed in Wellingtons, Mr Phillips expressed his thanks to everyone who helped to make the event such a success. “The forecast had been for rain – typical weather for ducks,” he said, “but we were very lucky, and it was only the ducks – and a few enthusiastic pupils – who got wet! “The school’s technology department is currently raising funds for a laser cutter, which would enable pupils to produce high quality items of course work using the latest computer-aided design. “Thanks to such generous support from parents, pupils, teachers and the local community we have now raised nearly £1,000 towards our goal.”
