ONE of the great things about the National Garden Scheme is the sheer diversity of its gardens, writes Pat Causton.

Big or small, country estate or allotment plot, ornamental, wildlife friendly or formal – there’s a garden to suit absolutely all tastes. So whether you’re a seasoned garden visitor or a first-time supporter, why don’t you call in and relax for a few hours at one of the lovely Ceredigion gardens open to the public in midsummer?

Apart from spending an enjoyable and rewarding time among like-minded people you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are actively supporting nursing and caring charities such as Carers Trust, Hospice UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Whether your particular penchant is for vegetable growing or garden design and ornamental plants, there are two gardens, Llanllyr and Aberystwyth Allotments, both opening on 1 July, which will be of interest to the keen gardener.

Llanllyr is situated in the midst of peaceful countryside in the Aeron Valley. Although listed in the NGS booklets as opening only by arrangement from April till October, they will now be hosting an open day with a specialist plant fair by Ceredigion Growers Association.

Included within this garden is a large pool, a bog garden, formal water garden, gravel garden, laburnum arbour, herbaceous and shrub borders and a spectacular rose garden full of old-fashioned scented roses.
