A LLANON woman has praised a tree which her late husband bought her almost 40 years ago saying it is a “beautiful specimen” which she hopes more people can appreciate.
Stella Davies told the Cambrian News that despite seeing plenty of examples of Araucaria araucana, commonly called monkey puzzle tree, in the UK, she has never seen such a fine example as the one her late husband Thomas bought her 39 years ago.
The tree has since grown taller than nearby telegraph poles and has this year started sprouting a bumper crop of distinctive orange cones.
Mrs Davies said she wanted others to be able to enjoy what she said was “such a lovely specimen” of the tree.
“This is a very big monkey puzzle tree,” Mrs Davies said: “I have seen an awful lot of these trees but I have never seen such a lovely specimen as this. It is a beautiful specimen.
“There was a big funeral at the church here the other day and so many people stopped to look at it. My husband bought it for me and I planted it 39 years ago. He has since passed away.”
