PENPARCAU’S Pen Dinas monument needs repair work to replace a lightning conductor, a paraglider has warned.

Glyn Ivens said he noticed that a former lightning conductor which had been on top of the monument appears to have been blown off after taking pictures of the top of the monument from his paraglider.

Mr Ivens said: “The lightning conductor on the Pen Dinas monument appears to be in need of repair.

“A previous 2007 picture of the monument shows an intact lightning conductor configuration.

“I’m no expert, but what appears to have happened is that the lightning rod has disappeared completely, maybe blown off in high winds, and the conducting wire is broken and hanging loose at the top.

“The work needed would seem to be replacement of the lightning road and repair of the wire.

“How this could be done will be a bit of a headache.

“I would think either an awful lot of scaffolding would be needed, which is difficult because there is no road access to the summit of Pen Dinas, or using a very expert and skilled rope access team.”
