Horse riders on the Llyn Peninsula joined hundreds of counterparts across the country on Sunday, 14 April, to promote a new scheme to keep them safe on the road.

Hundreds of horses took to the roads with the aim of educating car drivers on passing horses safely.

‘Pass Wide and Slow’ is a worldwide campaign and one ride was organised locally by Jenny Conolly, from Penmorfa.

Jenny’s ride started off from Plas Heli Sailing Academy, Pwllheli and was supported by riders from Pwllheli, Porthmadog, Anglesey and other locations from around north Wales.

The ride was eight miles, starting off from Plas Heli, through the town up to the beach and over to Gimblet Rock Caravan Park, then a drink stop at Pwllheli Golf Club, before heading back through Morfa Garreg Estate to Plas Heli.

Jenny said: “I would like to thank everybody who turned out last Sunday for their support and also thank the public for their kind donations as a street collection for the Wales Air Ambulance was made during the ride.

“It was a lot of work organising the ride but really worth the effort with such a good turnout.

“With an increasing number of reported incidents involving horses and vehicles, we’re building on our solid foundation of road safety education and campaigning to make drivers aware of what to do when they encounter horses on the road. We have seen 845 incidents reported to us from 1 March 2018 to 28 February 2019, as well over a quarter of riders reporting that they were subject of road rage or abuse.”
