MARK Williams MP has backed a Penparcau councillor’s calls for a pedestrian crossing at an “extremely dangerous” section of road into Aberystwyth.
The Ceredigion MP has written to the Welsh minister for transport, Ken Skates AM, in support of Cllr Lorrae Jones-Southgate’s calls for a pedestrian crossing on the A487 at Southgate, where two busy community facilities, Neuadd Goffa and St Anne’s Church, sit on opposite sides of the road.
Residents, particularly schoolchildren at nearby Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos primary school, and pensioners, many of whom use both facilities on a daily basis, are said to be risking their lives by crossing the road, which currently only has a low-curbed pedestrian refuge for safe crossing.
“This is an extremely dangerous place to cross the road,” Cllr Jones-Southgate told the Cambrian News at the time.
Mr Williams said this week: “I too have had a number of complaints from concerned local residents about the challenges of crossing between St Anne’s Church and Neuadd Goffa, despite their being a refuge in the middle of the road.
“Even in the short distance between the bend and the roundabout, I witnessed much speeding. The elderly and parents with children need the assurance they can cross safely.”
Cllr Jones-Southgate is calling for a pelican crossing – with traffic lights, zig-zag lines and a pedestrian button system – to be introduced, following the success of another such crossing in Penparcau.
