A MOTHER and daughter who walked 50 miles of the Ceredigion coast path to raise money for a Motor Neurone Disease charity in memory of a relative have completed the challenge.

Rhian Cooper and daughter Hana Brierley set off from Borth lifeboat station on 26 June, the ninth anniversary of the death of Rhian’s sister, Eryl Walsh.

Eryl was just 58 when she died of Motor Neurone Disease and Rhian, 62, has always wanted to raise money for MNDA, so she and Hana, 32, decided to do so by walking from Borth to Mwnt.

“We made it!” Rhian said.

“It was an epic weekend, helped by glorious weather. It was hard but very worthwhile.”

The pair achieved their goal of walking 50 miles in two days, starting in Borth on the Saturday and ending in Aberporth the following day.

Rhian said: “It was tough going to clock up 50 miles in just two days, but with help from our family to ensure we had regular food and water top-ups along the way, we eventually made it.

“The Ceredigion Coast Path is one of the most beautiful walks in the UK if not the world, and the breathtaking views certainly made our task a lot easier.”

The pair succeeded in raising £4,000 for the MNDA and their quest has not yet finished.

Their next challenge is to walk the Malvern Hills in August and, throughout the course of 2021, cover a total of 874 miles - the equivalent of walking from Lands End to John O’Groats.

“MND is a terrible disease and Hana and I are delighted to be playing our part in helping to fund research, so that eventually a cure can be found,” Rhian added.

“Hana and I did this walk in memory of Eryl, my sister, who sadly died of MND in 2012. Eryl and I were both born in Aberystwyth and Ceredigion will forever be an important place for me and I’m so pleased that I managed to see it at its beautiful best as we walked the coast path.

“We have now raised £4,000 and it was a huge inspiration for us as we could see donations coming in as we were walking!

“Diolch o galon i bob un ohonoch sydd wedi rhoi cyfraniad tuag at yr MNDA.”

Rhian and Hana are encouraging as many people as possible to donate to the MND association, which they can do via their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hana-brierley?
