THE mother of four-year-old Evan Davies has recalled the day he almost drowned in the swimming pool in Machynlleth.
Kelly Pearson said: “It was my fiancé who had taken Evan to his swimming lessons that night as I was at home preparing supper and looking after his younger sister.
“I did, however, receive a phone call from the leisure centre to inform me that Evan had been involved in an incident and I made my way there as quickly as possible.
“I then stayed the night with him in hospital whilst he was under observation.
“I am glad that this matter has finally been brought to an end after two long years and we can hopefully now put closure on it.”
The court heard that the county council had cancelled ‘free play’ sessions shortly after the incident, but that at the time no risk assessment had been carried out into those sessions.
Ms Pearson said she hoped the council had put in place measures to ensure the safety of youngsters at the pool.
Paul Griffiths, Powys Council’s strategic director for place, said: “The county council co-operated with the Health and Safety Executive throughout the investigation that followed the accident and has already implemented safety recommendations at the centre."
