A DOTING mum who donated her kidney to her sporty son has spoken of her pride after he won a major sports award.
Gay Evans and her family were left ‘devastated’ when ‘fit and healthy’ Lewis Evans was struck down with organ failure in his early 20s.
The former Aberystwyth juniors and Tregaron seniors rugby player, who works for Natural Resources Wales, was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, before undergoing dialysis three times a week for nearly two years.
But six months after Gay’s kidney proved the perfect match, Lewis stunned medical experts by winning gold in the 4x100m relay and two silvers in the 100m and snooker tournament at the British Transplant Games in Scotland.
And fittingly, Gay was at Cardiff City Stadium last month to see her 24-year-old son receive the Nation Radio Senior Sports Personality of the Year award (see picture above).
Lewis said: “My family were tested as possible living donors, and I was extremely lucky that my mum and my sister were both matches.
“My mum decided to donate because she felt it was her responsibility and didn’t want both her children undergoing surgery at the same time.
"I had the transplant in January 2017 and the operation went really well. In just a few months I was up on my feet and I’m working full-time again. It’s amazing to see the difference it has made to my health, and I’m so grateful to my mum.”
Gay, of Argoed farm, Tregaron, said: “What hit Lewis just came from nowhere and was obviously a big worry to us all.”
